Royal Line Oy is committed to promoting sustainable tourism and acting responsibly in the maritime environment of Helsinki. We develop our business in accordance with the principles of sustainable tourism. Sustainable tourism takes into account current and future economic, social and environmental impacts. Our goal is to preserve the experiential nature of archipelago tourism in the future and to promote development that improves the conditions for sustainable archipelago tourism. We want to make the archipelago more accessible to everyone by offering unforgettable cruise experiences while at the same time preserving the cultural history and marine nature of the archipelago. This responsibility program defines our key operating principles and goals for promoting sustainable development.
Economic sustainability
The company's lifeblood is financial sustainability, and we strive for long-term operations. We have developed our operations so that we can implement the principles of sustainable tourism also in terms of investments and procurement. Our investments are based on our business strategy.
Environmentally friendly maritime transport
We comply with environmental legislation and are committed to operating responsibly and sustainably in maritime transport. Our goal is to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and we are constantly developing more environmentally friendly operating methods. This is done, for example, by planning and organizing transportation efficiently. We optimize cruise routes and speeds to reduce fuel consumption and strive for economical and low-emission driving.
We promote responsible recreational use of the sea and through our own operations we seek solutions to prevent littering, eutrophication and chemicalization of waterways. In our procurement, we pay attention to sustainable choices and the recyclability of products. We develop waste sorting on our ships and choose cleaning agents that have the least possible impact on the environment.
We ensure the safety and sustainable lifecycle of our vessels through timely maintenance dockings.
Waste management and recycling
We have waste sorting and recycling facilities on our ships. We reduce the use of plastic and disposable products where possible and favor biodegradable alternatives. We strive for each of our employees to adopt our operating methods and contribute to reducing environmental impacts through their own actions.
We guide our customers on recycling and responsible waste management, as well as environmentally friendly choices. We strive to communicate to our customers the importance of their own choices, especially for waterways and archipelago nature.
We ensure the recycling of our vessels' septic and bilge water in accordance with environmental legislation.
Sustainable food services
We use local and seasonal ingredients whenever possible. We prefer responsibly caught fish and certified foods.
We strive to minimize food waste through efficient planning and portion size optimization.
Customer equality
Every customer is equally important to us! We strive to provide everyone with high-quality customer service and pay attention to accessibility and safety. We are developing our services to be more accessible. We are paying more attention to assistive devices on ships and piers. To guarantee quality, we train our staff and take care of their well-being at work. We also develop the quality of our services through customer experiences and actively monitor customer feedback.
Nature and archipelago protection
We develop cruise experiences where environmental awareness is a natural part of the cruise experience. We promote our passengers' environmental awareness and responsible behavior in the archipelago. We strive to increase awareness of the Helsinki archipelago and appreciation of marine nature among both locals and tourists. We inform our customers about sustainable tourism practices and inspire them to make responsible choices. We provide instructions on the protection of nature and fauna, such as respecting bird nesting areas and times. We participate in marine environment projects and cooperate with other sustainable tourism operators and local authorities to promote the sustainable development of the archipelago.
Collaboration – social and cultural responsibility
Close cooperation with other companies in the same area is in our and our customers' interest. We support local entrepreneurs and partners by sourcing products and services from nearby areas. At the same time , we are constantly looking for new opportunities to collaborate with local companies. We promote awareness of the cultural heritage of the Helsinki archipelago by offering diverse cruise routes and destinations, guide services and storytelling. We strive to develop tourism services that preserve the unique identity of the area, support the local community and Helsinki's position as a sustainable tourism destination (Green Destinations GSTC certification 3/2025). We also encourage our partners to operate in an environmentally responsible manner.
