Join the journey that began in 1945.

The beginning – 1945 and the first summers.
It all started in 1945 when Jaakko Rautakorpi began island transport with the wooden vessel m/s Annikki. The wooden gas-powered boat took summer residents from Ruoholahti to Vehkasaari – bringing the joy of the archipelago back after the war. Soon, Annikki became too small, and the service expanded to Pihlajasaari. The summers were filled with music, dockside dances, and a maritime atmosphere.
The 1950s and 60s
Routes expand – Sightseeing begins
In the 1950s, new destinations such as Pirttisaari and Mustahevonen were opened. During the 1952 Olympics, international sightseeing cruises began in Helsinki. Rautakorpi continued the service with his own vessels, and with the addition of m/s King and Terhi, the city began to be shown from the sea to an increasing number of people. Tourism grew – and maritime Helsinki captivated.
The 1970s and 80s
A time of growth and generational change
Jaakko Rautakorpi's son, Jorma, continued his father's work starting in 1970. The fleet was renewed, with modern vessels being acquired from the Netherlands and the Pellinge shipyard – including King, Queen, and Princess. The name Royal Line was adopted in 1986. The company grew, but the heart remained the same: Helsinki was seen and experienced from the sea.
The 1990s and 2000s
Restaurant cruises & corporate events
In the 1990s, lunch and dinner cruises started – and quickly became favorites. m/s Natalia and Katarina introduced a new era. At the same time, the significance of corporate events grew rapidly. New vessels like m/s Prince and RoyalCat strengthened the offerings. Söderskär Lighthouse and Espoo became new route destinations.
The 2010s and 2020s
A new flagship vessel & the 75th anniversary celebration
Royal Line became Finland’s most popular lunch and dinner cruise operator. In 2017, river cruises to Porvoo began, and in 2020, the 75th anniversary was celebrated with the new flagship vessel, m/s Helsinki. The maritime tradition remains strong – and the future looks as bright as a summer evening in the archipelago.
